Join for a plein air landscape workshop in the New York City. This workshop will cover the fundamentals of paintings landscapes en plein air.

Date:

The workshop runs Thursday, September 17th, to Sunday, September 20th. The rain date is Monday, September 21st.

Location:

We will be painting in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. Design by Frederick Lawn Olmstead, it has a number of picturesque vantage points that serve as a tranquil escape in one of the world’s busiest cities.

Focus

This workshop will be geared towards the fundamentals of landscape painting. We will cover the basics of observational drawing and painting, as well as composition and the theory of masses. We will discuss the mental frame work to improving our work, and I hope to leave you with a number of tools to be able to see the landscape in a new way. When we are learning to paint, we are learning to see. My goal is that this workshop will expand your ability of perception and deepen your understanding of the visual language and art of painting en plein air.

Supplies

Click here for a full breakdown of my supplies. I would like to stress that it is always important to have a secure set up that is wind resistant, and a way to transport your wet paintings back home.

Duration and Schedule

This workshop runs for four days.

Each morning starts with a demo from 9 – 12pm. These range from follow along demo’s - where I keep everyone in lock step and breaking down my exact process to each measurement and color mixture - to more traditional lecture or observational demos.

We break for lunch from 12-1pm.

From 1-4pm there is time for individual painting, where we break off and try our own hand at the lessons of the day. I circle around from each student, offering personal advice and suggestions.

Class Size:

Class is limited to 12.
