This painting was worked up over several sessions and finished indoors, based off of the work captured in the field, and other sunset paintings from my time in Poland this past summer.
The initial layer was what could be called a �sky panel� technique - a preparatory layer where a clean gradient of sky colors is painted and dried. In a subsequent session it is much easier to paint the clouds in and make any adjustments.
On this trip I realized how important it is to know which part of a gradient comes from the atmosphere itself, and which is cloud and denser vapor. It's a useful technique, as long as it stays true to the scene. I always want to avoid painting in a formulaic way.
