9x12in, oil on linen mounted to Gatorfoam panel
Eventually the weather became pleasant enough that I could stand and paint under the sun in the late morning. This was perhaps my favorite field painting completed en plein air, after being inspired by Calame.
I also drew on some of William Merritt Chase's summer paintings of Long Island - balanced horizons and big open views.
What I liked was the interchange between the beige fields and road and the green grasses and bushes. One of Claude Lorrain's formulas is a small light spot in a dark field and a small dark spot in a light field at the same time. This scene offered that balance on its own.
