12x9in, oil on linen mounted to Gatorfoam panel
I noticed the lions of the fountain in front of Saint Sulpice on the last day of the workshop. Students were scattered along all sides of the square, set up underneath the trees to avoid the midday sun. In the center was a fountain with four lions, one on every corner. Like the church, it was undergoing cleaning to remove decades of smog, one section at a time.
I decided on a vertical crop to include the dark columns of the church behind, and focus on the quarter lighting on the lion. The water coming over the side of the fountain threw a glare that lit up the cast shadows of the basin, periodically broken by the rhythm of the falling water into an uneven veil and a string of bright droplets.
