The last day of the Paris workshop was spent on a complex perspective scene. Years ago I heard artists talk about a special quality of light in certain regions, Giverny and northern France among them. I am piecing together what was meant, but this painting turned up something related.
In Switzerland I noticed the direction of the sun seemed more stable in the early morning, and here I realized why. In the morning the sun's arc is mostly climbing, so its direction on architecture holds much steadier than in the afternoon, when it traverses across the sky and shadows move quickly from one wall to another. It worked very well for the early demo, but I suspect my students wondered why it seemed so much harder for them!
