9x12in, oil on linen mounted to Gatorfoam panel
A heavy grey layer had been sitting over the fields all evening. Then a gap opened along the horizon and the entire underside of it turned red.
The band was the easy part. The harder question was how far to cool and grey the cloud above it, because that relationship is what makes the red read as brilliant rather than just loud. The land stayed almost completely in shadow, a flat green strip across the bottom, which suited the picture fine.
