16x24in, oil on stretched linen
The blind arches of Orsanmichele are the part of the building I keep coming back to. This is the larger version of the study, and the extra size gave me room to work through the tracery without letting it flatten into a pattern.
For most of the day the stone sits at nearly one value. What makes it readable is the raking light just as the sun clears the rooftops across the street, when every rosette and cusp picks up a thin warm edge and drops a shadow behind it. The blue openings were the only cool note, and I leaned on them to keep the wall from going chalky.
The doorway below had to stay dark and simple.
