I Fontanna del Nettuno

$2,800.00

16x20in, oil on stretched linen

This ended up being a four morning painting. I wanted to paint the horses of the Fountain of Neptune in the early morning light, and it did not disappoint. As the sun peeked over the distant palazzos, its light scattered in the fountain's mist. Even though I was standing a few feet away, it created a beautiful veil and sense of atmosphere.

I was unsure how far to push this piece, and left some areas very loose. If I had tried to paint each droplet of water, things could have gone very poorly. Instead I went for one strong optical focal point - the horses. Still, I was tempted into the marble base of the fountain. It's hard to resist those textures
