12x9in, oil on linen mounted to Gatorfoam panel

This was the first painting of the trip, and of my stay in Florence. I have done a few pieces in Piazza Santissima Annunziata over the years, and I always enjoy trying to capture the frescoes. The lighting here was interesting as there was an interchange of value between the stone, columns and plaster walls - at the base of the column, they are darker than the wall behind it, but as the columns rise, the wall in arcade become darker than the stonework.

This was a three day painting, started alongside fellow American-who-spends-a-lot-of-time-in-Florence Painter Quinlan Cooney. Florence was a lot of fun, as many of the painting sessions were done alongside other painters.
