Despite grand plans, I only managed one daytime painting from the balcony of my stay, and this was it. In theory, the terracotta roof tiles found in Tuscany and other parts of Italy are beautiful. In practice, they always make for a challenging subject, and often the success of the composition is determined by other elements in the scene.
In this painting I focused on the clouds eastward, over the city skyline. Focusing on a grander view, the rooftops can almost blend together in little patches of rust. The passing clouds managed to cast a patchwork of shadows that made its way all the way to the distant hills that surround the city.
